We finished the sanding in the upstairs bathroom this week! The project is going well, and I am excited for the progress. Next step is to paint the walls and then we will thoroughly clean the bathroom. We need to figure out how to get paint which is a problem currently. We will check downstairs for the colors we want, but I don't think they are in there. I can't wait to paint the bathroom stalls and really see everything come together. I will put pictures in next week's blog of the progress we have. I'm still hoping to put some bathroom necessities to put in the cabinet.

My new innovation project is with my sister and Emily C. We are fixing up the bathroom upstairs by cleaning and repainting. This week we started sanding the stalls down so new paint will stick to them. The problem we ran into is that we didn't have replacement paper for the electric sander and it was super worn down. We will have to get some for next innovation day. We also need grey and chalkboard paint and masks so we aren't inhaling paint chips in. This is a fun innovation project, but I hope that we have enough time to get it done. We are going to go to ACE hardware soon to see if they will donate any paint since we don't have any money. If they don't we can do a fundraiser (hopefully an OODC) to get money for supplies. On top of repainting the stalls, we wanted to put things into the new cabinet that we put in there. I was thinking deodorant, perfume, maybe makeup wipes, tampons, pads, lint roller, and other things that girls like to use. If we have an OODC that would give us enough money to supply these items. I think we can pull this off in the short amount of time we have.
I did my TED talk this week! Basketball is all done, so my innovation project is as well. I summed up my project quite nicely in my last blog post if you are interested. I have no idea what my next project will be. I'll brainstorm on Thursday.
I haven't shot around for a couple weeks because of a knee injury I obtained in basketball. Surprise, surprise on that one. I was just trying to get videos of my shot this week so that I can compare it to the first video I took. The links to both the first and the last video will be at the end of this post. Reflecting on my project, I have learned a lot about free throw shooting just by doing it. The main way to get better at shooting free throws is, you guessed it, shooting free throws. My form was okay from when I started this, so there wasn't much to improve in that aspect. I talked to my coach as my expert about my free throws. I asked him about my form, and he also watched me shoot quite a few free throws. His evaluation of my shot was that my form was completely fine. He noticed that I was inconsistent though. When you shoot free throws, your hand should end parallel to the ground in a "goose neck." My problem is that the muscles in my wrist are not strong enough to consistently do that so my hand twists, causing the ball to hit the rim on either side instead of straight on. The was to improve this is to do strengthening exercises for my wrists as well as shoot a lot of free throws. I figured out that if I shoot a lot of free throws, my free throws get more consistent throughout the time. I shot about 100 in a row the other week, and after that I was almost 80 perfect from the free throw line at practice. The percentage went back down after I was sick for a week and not shooting. This leads me to believe that for my free throws to be good, I just need to keep shooting. Basketball season is coming to a close, and I think so is this project. I figured out how to improve my free throws, as well as a valuable lesson of practice makes perfect. There really isn't a quick fix to improving anything except for good solid reps and practice. Here are some pictures of my form along with the links to the videos of my shot. Beginning of project: https://vimeo.com/207218346 End of project: https://vimeo.com/207223601 Unfortunately, last week for innovation day the gym was covered in tarps for draw down so I could not practice my free throws. I instead worked on my project that was going to be auctioned off at draw down. This week, I'm going to keep track off all the free throws I make and miss throughout the entire hour so I am able to get an accurate percentage. This gives me a more accurate percentage overall because I am inconsistent when I'm shooting.
I decided that this project is going to be in three phases. First, improving my free throw shot, second, improving my overall field goal percentage, and third, improving my ball handling skills.
Yesterday I got my base line shooting for improving my free throws. I went down to the gym and shot around. Emily video taped my shot so I could look at it and see where to improve my form. I probably shot over 100 free throws in that hour. What I learned is that my shooting is very inconsistent. I would go from making 6 in a row (I have video proof if you don't believe me) to missing probably ten in a row. I attempted to get a baseline of how many shots I made out of 10. The one that I actually counted was 6 for 10. This is actually one of my better free throw percentages. It is hard for me to get a true baseline because my shot is so inconsistent. Sometime in the next week I am going to ask my basketball coach to watch me shoot and give me pointers on improving my form and consistency. I have a feeling that the inconsistency comes from the weakness in my wrists. My coach told me last year that my shot sometimes goes straight in or to the left or right because my wrist isn't strong enough and so that makes my shot inconsistent. I can fix this problem by doing exercising and stretches to strengthen my wrist. Next week I am going to use what my coach told me about fixing my free throw and then I will see if I can put it into practice. I can't wait to see if I can get my consistency up! Even if it is that I'm consistently shooting 5 for 10 from the free throw line, I'd rather be consistent than shooting 1 for 10 and then 6 for 10. This was a very eventful innovation day for me! This week I made a plan for what to do with basketball. My expert is going to be my coach Warren. I hope that I can get in the gym this next innovation day and shoot around.
The topic so soccer is not very sensible at the moment due to a number of factors. I can't shoot outside because there is a foot of snow on the field and shooting in the gym is completely different. Currently I am in basketball so soccer isn't the primary focus of my sports at the moment. With these reasons in mind, I have decided to switch the sport I am doing to basketball. It is much more applicable to my current season, and I already have an expert to help me with improving my shot. I know that this change will set my project back, but I am looking forward to evolving the topic into basketball. I am not completely shutting the door on doing soccer, but I will rethink my approach when the season starts in March.
I wasn't able to do much this week with kicking the ball because I injured my foot. This innovation project is in kind of a rut in that I don't really know what to do with it. I will think about it over this next week to see what will make it fun again.
This week for innovation day, I took my idea for improving my shot and actually went down to the gym and shot around. I found out that my problem isn't with power, but with my accuracy. So now I am going to focus on how to improve the accuracy of my shot, while keeping up the level of power I already have. I started doing this by attempting to shoot the soccer ball in a trash can. This is something that my previous coach had taught me because you have such a small space to shoot it into. This coming week I plan to contact my soccer coach and use him as my expert.
