I love sunsets. That's the reason I thought of this project in the first place. I had so many watercolor papers that I didn't know what to do with. I always make just random combinations of colors and set the papers aside with no real purpose. I went through the countless sheets of water color and found this one that was blue and purple and a little green. It was so pretty that I had to use it. I had originally tried to just make a sunset with water color but it was just annoying. So I took that piece of watercolor and chopped it into a bunch of little triangles. I put them on half the page leaving the top ones looking like waves. Next I needed to do the sky and the sun. So first I did the sun. I didn't personally have any pages that were the right color for a sun so I went to the pile of unclaimed water colors (We have way too many in our art class). I found a really colorful yellow and red and orange page that I decided would be the sun. I just made it into a circular shape. At this point what I had left was the sky. I didn't want to just to straight blue because that's boring. So in the blue part of the sky I mixed in some teal to spice it up. At the part touching the water I put mutes pinks and yellows to mimic the way a sunset spreads out throughout the horizon. I honestly loved how this turned out. It was supposed to be for the draw down, but I couldn't part with it. It is going in my dorm room for sure. The only thing I am unhappy with is that the pieces keep coming off of the paper because I just used a glue stick. If I could redo, I would use rubber cement; which is what I am using to fix all the pieces falling off.

I've improved my water color skills and stained glass skills this semester. Stained glass was brand new to me and I was able to complete an entire stained glass piece this semester. I did a bunch of different things with water color including putting it on the clay wheel to make spiral designs. I unfortunately can't continue improving my stained glass skills because the fumes cause asthma flare ups for me. I think I could have improved on the stained glass by making sure the pieces were more precise before I put them together. Overall this semester was good because it just increased my creativity. I can't wait for next semester!
I started the idea for his project by scrolling for water color project ideas on Tumblr. I love using water color and had been using the clay wheel with water color so I wanted something different to do. I came across a picture that looked similar to mine. To make, I first experimented with watercolor and salt. I actually made like 20 different pages of water color to experiment with the mixing of water color and salt. I went through my many pages of water color and chose the blue-purple- salt one pictured. To make the planet itself, I just cut the circle out of the water color page. To draw the black, I used a calligraphy pen. I practiced drawing the girl and the lines and stars to know what worked and what didn't. Once I was satisfied with how to draw everything, I used a pencil to outline everything. Once I had it how I wanted it, I went over the pencil with calligraphy pen. And it was then complete! I learned a lot through this project. I discovered more about manipulating watercolor, using salt in watercolor, and drawing abstract figures. I'm really happy with how this project turned out. My sister liked it so much; she is hanging it in her room! I love how the girl turned out and all the little stars. I can't wait to continue my exploration into watercolor. This project was inspired by wanting to start hand lettering. I had practiced writing different fonts a little bit at home one day. I like the way this quote looked and then saw a piece of water color that I thought it would look perfect over, I made the water color page during experimenting with water color. I wanted to put a quote over it, but I also wanted it to look nice. I used a artist brush marker to write the words out. Before I wrote the words, I measured out the lines to make sure they were straight and nice. I like how this turned out. It is simple and neat. I learned a little more about writing out different fonts and watercolor. |
